Importance of Building Backlinks
by: Rob Ferrall
Getting other websites to link to yours is an important part of your website development. There are many reasons why a website will survive and flourish, and also a lot of reason why your website might die a premature death and have no visitors. Steady, strategic link building can help you maintain your website traffic and cause your visitors to increase as well.
Now, don't get me wrong: getting thousands of random websites to link to you might not always be a good thing. Search engines like it when a link to your website is contained on a page where the page content is relevant to your website. For instance, if you have a website about cat food, you might not want to pursue a link from a website about Indian tea recipes. Your link will not likely be seen as helpful (or relevant) to the visitor of the Indian tea recipe website, and search engines will also view this linking as non-relevant. Please understand I am not saying that non-relevant links will hurt you, only that they are not the types of links that you should pursue.
How can you get backlinks?
You can obtain backlinks for your website using a number of methods:
* Posting in forums with your website URL in your signature
* Writing reviews of products that allow you to post your URL
* Responding to blog postings
* Writing articles and submitting them with your website link in your resource box
* Submitting your website to classified ad sites
* Submitting your website to directories
* There are many more as well
What is the purpose of building backlinks?
There can be great benefit for your website with a proper link building strategy. Building backlinks to your website can:
* Cause your website to be indexed and crawled by search engines
* Increase your visitors from strategic placement of your website link
* Increase your overall search engine position for keywords or phrases
* Increase brand awareness for your name or business name. . .
Building backlinks, if done properly, can increase your website traffic significantly. It doesn't have to be hard, simply do a little at a time and you may be surprised with the results over a short period of time.

Web Site Promotion - Are You Requesting Free Backlinks?
by: Robert Fuess
Everyone who is trying to improve their web site's ranking wants backlinks. This is an essential ingredient to your web site promotion strategy. Some happen because the right person (a webmaster) stumbled across your web site and likes your content. But you can get many more links on other web sites pointing to yours - if only you ask them. One-way links (where they link to your page but you don't have to link back) are much more valuable to your web site promotion than link exchanges, and they often take the same amount of effort to obtain. Search engines rate these more heavily when evaluating your web site. These free backlinks can be obtained by politely asking the webmaster to make the addition of your web site resource.
Only if a webmaster requests a link exchange do I consider doing such. The web site promotion strategy I normally use is to start by asking for what I really want.
WHAT NOT TO DO:
Above all, courtesy and personal touch is a must with these emails. Don't make these requests appear too cold or canned. Don't be insistent or prideful.
GOOD WEB SITES TO REQUEST A FREE BACKLINK FROM:
Many times when you send out a request - even a polite one, you may get ignored. To minimize this scenario, use the following web site promotion trick: Find out who has given backlinks to your competitors. Then ask these webmasters to link to your web site. There are a few different tools out there that can help you with this. I would recommend using the backlink checker from Submit Express http://www.submitexpress.com/linkpop/. You can also use it to monitor your web site, since you will seldom be notified if they do follow your suggestion and put in a link to your site. A good backlink checker is an essential tool for any webmaster interested in web site promotion.
FINDING WHO TO CONTACT:
Most web sites have a contact page or an email link to the webmaster. Search around.
(The following is assuming the web site you are researching is http://www.yourwebsiteurl.com )
Next try going to http://www.yourwebsiteurl.com/info.txt . This is an info page on the web site that many webmasters have. Also, try looking at Alexa information for their website. Many web sites have information on who to contact in their Alexa account. Here is the format. http://info.alexa.com/data/details?url=http%3a//www.yourwebsiteurl.com/ Or you can click on this link and change the web site in the textbox at the top of this page.
If you still cannot find it, you could always make an educated guess. Many web sites follow webmaster@yourwebsiteurl.com or admin@yourwebsiteurl.com pattern for the webmaster. Also look for a "add your link" section or page. This may be on a links page or it may be elsewhere. If a web site has an established procedure for asking for backlinks you will always want to follow them. That is a courtesy they will expect.
WRITING THE EMAIL:
The subject of the email should make them want to read your email. Don't misrepresent the email purpose by pretending to be a long lost friend or say "Lottery Winner". No one likes to be duped. You may want to put a brief comment such as "I love your web site! May I ask you a question?". You want to attract their interest in a courteous manner and not look like you are being sneaky.
THE BODY OF THE EMAIL:
The first part of your email body should complement their web site somehow. Make this a couple of sentences. This is the most tailored part of the email. It also keeps your email from being thrown out automatically. Those who get a preview of the top 2-3 lines of an email will see a complement - and may to read further. If they don't read it, your web site promotion efforts will not work.
Then, you should let them know how you found their site (what search engine and what keywords you used). Many webmasters find this to be valuable information, since it tells them what is working for their own web site promotion.
THEN you should politely request the honor of a link to your web site. (Or you may suggest your website as an additional resource . . . if your website has good resources or tools.) TIP: Not all those you contact will understand the term backlink. Just use the term "link". And especially don't mention the phrase "free backlinks". You don't want to imply that they could or should charge for them.
When you email other webmasters asking for backlinks, you should include the following:
* The URL of where you want the link to go to
* The suggested text for the link. This would be what you want the link to look like to visitors on that web site. Make sure that it encourages people to visit your web site and appropriately represents what your site is about. Having a keyword phrase in here is good - if you think the webmaster will go for this.
* A suggested description for the link. They may use this next to the link or in the title attribute of the link.
* The suggested HTML for the link.
* The page you would like the link to be on. Normally this would be a relevant page to your product or service. Sometimes it is in their list of links on a separate links page. Only rarely will this be the home page.
The last part should thank them for their time and encourage them to contact you if they have any questions. This is a must! They did you the favor of reading the email.
In your signature, put your full name, your email address and your title (such as Webmaster).
THATS IT!
Ideally, I would recommend sending out the emails as you find the web sites. This keeps you from forgetting or losing interest in that site. Have fun with your web site promotion!

3 Steps To Getting Hundreds Of Backlinks To Your Website Absolutely FREE
by: Cory Threlfall
Link Popularity as you know plays a BIG part in your websites ranking within the Search Engines.
So, the basic breakdown is, the more links pointing to your website, the higher up the search engines will rank your website.
More importantly though is getting those High PR websites linking back to yours.
The question at hand is... "How can I get those High PR links without having to buy High PR links and/or spend countless hours surfing the web for link partners with the possible potential of being denied?"
And as webmasters, we can not afford to waste time, especially if your starting out on a part time basis.
We must utilize every minute we can to getting the most out of our efforts.
So with that being said, I'm going to reveal to you the 'Back Door' strategy I use for getting those High PR links to your website Absolutely FREE and have them begging you to come back.
And the cool thing is this can be done following these 3 steps I'm about to mention so pay attention because if you do just this, you will not only get hundreds of backlinks to your website, you'll also get hundreds, if not thousands of Targeted visitors to your website at the same time...
...all for FREE!
Are you ready?
Good, because I am.
Step #1. First you must write an Article.
The first step is to write an related article about your Product or Service that draws the reader in and gets them to click through to your website once they finish reading it to find out more about you and your Product or Service.
Now, your probably wondering why you have to write an article.
Well, it's real simple actually because what do you get to put at the end of your article?
Your 'Resource Box' with your website information and most important of all... your URL pointing back to your website.
So when someone chooses to publish your article in their newsletter or on their website, blog or article directory, they MUST add your 'Resource Box' with your website information and URL.
I know some of you are saying... "I don't know how to write an article" ... well, your not alone.
Here are a few resources I've put together for you so you can get the basic idea of How-To structure your articles with ease or get someone else to write them for you.
The first is an article I wrote called... THE 7 Step Formula For Writing POWERFUL Articles In Less Than An Hour.
It will show you How-To structure your articles for easy writing. http://www.internetwondersezine.com/article_11.html
The second resource is Elance.com - http://www.elance.com - which is basically a place where you can go and submit a project by category and freelance writers, etc. will then bid on your project. You pick the winner and you set the budget.
This will get you started in the right direction.
Remember, your article is the Nuts and Bolts of this 'Back Linking' strategy, so make sure you put some effort into it to get it as much exposure as possible.
Step #2. Submit your article to Article Directories.
This is the next step and an important one at that because this is where your article or articles are going to get picked up by website owners and/or ezine publishers who are in constant need of fresh, quality information to feed their audiences hunger for information.
There are literally hundreds of Article Directories out there and thousands of ezine publishers looking for quality content on a daily basis. And if they choose your article for publication, they must include your 'Resource Box' with your websites information and URL.
It's all about the numbers. The more Article Directories and websites you submit your articles to, the more potential Backlinks you'll get to your website.
And since Article Directories have recently adopted RSS(Real Simple Syndication) technology into the mix your articles will even get More mileage without you lifting a finger, creating even more Backlinks to your website.
More on RSS in a minute.
Are you starting to see the Power behind writing your own articles.
I hope so.
Step #3. Create your own RSS Feed for your articles.
This last step is a very Powerful step as well.
What you need to do is set up your own RSS Feed for your articles.
Now, if you don't know what RSS is here's the basic definition...
RSS is by definition - an acronym for 'Real Simple Syndication' or 'Rich Site Summary', and the .XML extension is the format used for distributing your news headlines via the Web, which is known as 'Syndication.
'Syndication' is where the TRUE power of RSS is unleashed, getting your message or information across the web in an INSTANT to websites, subscribers and/or readers who subscribed to your RSS Feed.
The easiest way for you to do this is to set up your own Blog either through...
Wordpress.org - http://www.wordpress.org
Or through...
Blogger.com - http://www.blogger.com
Wordpress is a little more advanced so I recommend if you don't have alot of experience with Blogs or installing scripts that you go set up a Blogger blog which will only take you less than 5 minutes to do.
I'm just giving you some options, that's all.
Once you've set up your Blog the only thing left for you to do is add you articles.
TIP: Make sure you hyperlink your URL and use Anchor Text with your most targeted keywords. By doing this the Search Engine spiders will rank your website higher under that keyword term you specify in your Anchor Text.
After you've added your articles all you have to do now is submit your new RSS Feed to RSS Directories and RSS Search Engines.
Here's a few resources for you to get started with.
Ping-O-Matic - http://pingomatic.com
RSS Top 55 - http://www.masternewmedia.org/rss/top55
That's it.
Now I know I dumped alot of information on you within this article so just take it Step-By-Step because once you implement it properly it will benefit you for years to come with Backlinks to your website and FREE targeted traffic via the Search Engines, Website Owners and eZine Publishers.

Building Backlinks for Google PageRank Success
by: Joshua Mabilia
Backlinks are incoming links to a website and indicate importance or popularity of the website. In formal sense, backlinks connect webpages, and so when a webpage that links to another, it is taken as a 'vote of approval' by the former in favor of latter.
PageRank - presumably named so after Google's co-founder Larry Page - predates Google. That is the reason that while the name 'PageRank' is Google's trademark; the PageRank patent is assigned to Stanford University, where Larry Page and Sergey Brin researched on the subject before founding Google.
PageRank is a patented algorithm whereby numerical weighting is assigned to each set of hyperlinked texts in a document, for example a webpage. Looking from this angle, it would seem backlinks and PageRank complement one another. In other words, the more the backlinks a webpage has, greater will be its PageRank. Available evidence however does not always support this.
Google's rise as a search engine giant and its known emphasis on PageRank led people to build up mammoth quantity of backlinks to webpages. Link farms specializing in 'creating' backlinks in thousands crowded the scene and managed to make fast bucks in no time. To be true, many websites did flourish by exchanging or buying backlinks.
But axe was soon to fall. Today, after several rounds of Google's purging, the concept of reciprocal linking or mutual backlinks has firmly taken a backseat.
So, how the picture looks like? Are backlinks passé? If not, what could you do to increase backlinks to your website so that ultimately your PageRank improves?
Quality of Backlinks
In an interesting study
[http://www.prweaver.com/blog/2004/11/15/49-relationship-pagerank-number-of-backlinks] on relationship between PageRank and number of backlinks, Olivier Duffez has this to say:
"... a page can have PR5 with a single backlink whereas another one can have 3,000 backlinks and PR5 too."
What this means is that a few backlinks from high PageRank sites are worth many times more than hundreds of backlinks from low PageRank sites.
Nature of Backlinks
Admittedly, securing backlinks from high PageRank sites is easier said than done. Unless there is some intrinsic value and / or focused convergence of content, there is no reason why high PageRank sites will feel compelled to provide backlinks.
Nonetheless, backlinks from same (or even a notch lower) PR sites, dealing in similar topics as yours, are always a great boon for PageRank.
Focus on Keywords
As far as possible, ensure that anchor texts of backlinks exactly relate to the topics of pages linked to. In addition, if anchor texts of backlinks are also your keyword phrases, it is all the more better.
To give an example, suppose 'fishing in queens harbor' is your keyword phrase and you have a content page titled 'Fishing In Queens Harbor - Pleasure Untold'. Ensure now that the backlinks that point to this content page have your keyword phrase as anchor text - something like below:
"If you are game to weekend adventures, do not forget to try fishing in queens harbor".
Such specific backlinks notify search engines that your webpage is indeed important for the topic, thus helping in obtaining higher PageRank for that webpage.
Article Submissions
This has become a rage among potential PageRank seekers. If you subscribe to newsgroups, you will be flooded with new articles everyday. There is no harm in joining this crowd. In fact this is one area where you can play around with your backlinks.
If you are writing articles, ensure that they are informative, have a distinct style and above all, are able to capture imagination. The truth is if your articles have no takers, there will be no backlinks.
On the flip side, article submissions are a great way not only to get many backlinks (and therefore higher PageRank), but also to boost your profile as a prolific writer. There are thousands of article submission sites out there. Notable among them are GoArticles, IdeaMarketers, iSnare, PromotionWorld, EzineArticles, etc.
Other Techniques
Blogs and forums are good places to earn backlinks. Unfortunately, they are being increasingly used for link-spamming. So much so that it will not be uncommon to find that a blog administrator's only job is to delete spurious comments that contribute no value.
Yet, blogs and forums are meant for larger public participation in order to encourage and nourish ideas and discussions. If you are serious about quality backlinks, do participate constructively in related blogs and forums. Once again, they help to grow your stature among fellow participants. And they also help to get top-quality backlinks.
